Storage Tips
If you’re planning to store your belongings for more than a few months, a little preparation can help keep everything in excellent condition. The following recommendations will help you make the best use of your storage unit.
Use cardboard boxes instead of plastic bags. While plastic bags may appear waterproof, they can trap condensation and moisture, increasing the risk of mould and mildew. Strong cardboard boxes allow items to breathe and are generally a better option for long-term storage.
Choose quality, uniform-sized boxes. Sturdy boxes of a similar size are easier to stack securely, making better use of your storage space while reducing the risk of damage. We also stock a range of packing materials—just ask in the office or contact us for details.
Protect delicate belongings. Wrap breakable items individually using bubble wrap or packing paper before boxing them. Clearly label these boxes as “Fragile” and position them where they won’t be crushed by heavier items.
Store clothing carefully. Vacuum storage bags are ideal for clothes, bedding and soft furnishings. They reduce the amount of space required while helping protect fabrics from dust, moisture and pests.
Prepare appliances before storage. Thoroughly clean and dry refrigerators, washing machines and other household appliances. Ensure all water has been drained, leave doors slightly open to prevent odours and mould, and secure any cables neatly.
Keep items off the floor. Where possible, place boxes and furniture on pallets or similar raised surfaces. This improves air circulation and provides extra protection from damp floors.
Wrap mattresses properly. Mattresses can retain moisture if left unprotected. Use a purpose-made mattress cover or bag to keep them clean and dry. We have a selection of mattress bags available in various sizes.
Cover furniture. Use protective sheets or furniture covers to shield surfaces from dust and scratches, particularly if other items will be stacked nearby.
Maximise your storage unit. Plan your layout carefully by placing heavier items at the bottom and lighter items on top. Make full use of the available height while ensuring stacks remain stable and accessible.
